Our feature pond plants this month are gorgeous Water Hyacinths that not only bloom in the spring, but almost all year long! These lavender beauties are calming and peaceful – and best of all they attract butterflies and dragonflies that eat mosquitoes.
Water hyacinths (Eichhornia crassipes) are among the showiest of water garden plants. Flower stalks that grow about six inches (15 cm.) above the foliage arise from the centers of the rosettes in spring, and by the end of spring, each plant holds as many as 20 gorgeous purple flowers.
Growing water hyacinth plants is easy. Once established, they require no special care except occasional thinning, full sun, and Hawaii temperatures. Introduce them to the pond by scattering bunches of plants over the surface of the water. They quickly take hold and begin to grow. Due to the fast growth, water hyacinths need to be regularly thinned. Not to worry, fruit trees and gardens love the thinned-out plants. Many backyard gardeners have also found that water hyacinth ashes are particularly good fertilizer.
